A TRIBUTE TO LORI

The first American woman killed in Iraq is Pfc. Lori Ann Piestewa. She is American Indian and one of eight soldiers found during the rescue of POW Jessica Lynch, who was Lori's room mate at Ft. Bliss, El Paso , Texas. Lori was 23 years of age the mother of a four year old son and a three year old daughter. She lived in Tuba City, Arizona and was a member of the Hopi Nation. There are currently 56 Hopis serving in the Us military. 48 are in Iraq. Lori is believed to be the first American Indian woman ever to be killed in combatfor the United States militaryThere is great sadness and pride in the land of her ancestors.
On the day that Lori's death was confirmed by the Army a light snow fell in Tuba City, her hometown. According to Hopi beliefs, the soul of a person who has led a good and honorable life returns to Hopi land in the form of precipitation. In Hopi, Piestewa is defined as the rainwater that collects on the desert floor after a heavy downpour.

Pfc Jessica Lynch & Pfc Lori Ann Piestewa

Jessica Lynch, a 19-year-old Army private first class from Palestine, W. Va., was captured March 23 after her 507th Maintenance Company convoy was ambushed in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah. She was rescued from a hospital in the city April 1 by U.S. commandos.During this rescue the bodies of eight American soldiers were found
One was Lori Piestewa
This is the tale of two privates. They were sisters-in-arms - two young women fighting for Uncle Sam. They were roommates at Fort Bliss military base in Texas; tentmates in the Gulf, and close friends at all places in between.
Lynch will come home to West Virginia on crutches, to the waving of American flags; Piestewa will return to the reservation in a coffin draped in an American flag

Friends and family of Lori Piestewa have established a memorial fund for her 4-year-old son, Brandon and 3-year-old daughter, Carla, who are being cared for by their grandparents in Tuba City. Those wishing to contribute to the fund, which will be used to raise the children and for their future educational needs, can send checks to"Lori Piestewa's Memorial Fund" at any Wells Fargo bank. The account has been set up under the auspices of the Hopi Nation.
